This must be one of most people’s top fears. You’ll often find it comes above death as the thing people fear most. There’s even a proper name for fear of public speaking, glossophobia, which comes from the Greek for tongue and fear.

It’s also one of the areas I love to help with most, having suffered from it myself in the past and overcome it. I learned to conquer this using hypnotherapy, coaching and NLP techniques on myself together with regular practice as an active member of a public speaking club.

Get More Confident with Public Speaking

As somebody once said, whether you think you can, or whether you think you can’t, you’re probably right. Public speaking is just another conversation really but that’s not how your unconscious conditioning usually deals with it. Most people will experience some degree of ‘excitability’ thinking ahead to speaking in public. Even really confident speakers will have some of that and they will use it to be ‘up’ to speak at their best. It becomes a problem for many of us when that excited feeling flips over into anxiety because of what your mind is making of the situation and goes into ‘fight or flight’. What’s useful is to remember that excitement and anxiety stem from the same hormone and there are so many ways to learn how to manage this response to public speaking rather than what you may have become used to as a reaction. We’re not fixed like this, the mind is incredibly plastic, so please don’t give up hope. It’s something you can learn to do better with a bit of help and practice.

You weren’t born fearing public speaking. It’s something we pick up from early learned experience. Usually through our experiences in education, when we first learned that being in the spotlight can feel uncomfortable because of the reactions of others to us and the connection your mind makes at that time. Using hypnosis and coaching, I can help you reframe those early experiences so your mind can begin to have a different perspective and what has been a phobia can be transformed over time, sometimes quicker than you think!

Practice Public Speaking

Once you feel a bit more confident with your public speaking, I’m happy to coach you further on whatever journey you want to take with it. I would encourage you to keep practising public speaking until it becomes like anything else you learned and got used to doing. There was a time you couldn’t walk or ride a bike. It will have felt strange at first but at some point you learned what helped, how to get your balance and eventually it became automatic. Public speaking is just the same. You have to practice it though, like you did the other things, so it can feel more natural for you. I coach clients through specific presentations they need to give and I encourage clients to join a public speaking club to hone their skills even further.

The change most people need with public speaking is at the level of their beliefs and we can get to the root of that with Cognitive Hypnotherapy in most cases.   You might be surprised what the original memory-forming experience has been and what we can do relatively quickly to help your mind accept that you can be 'safe' to present yourself in public.  I use hypnosis to guide your unconscious to accept bespoke confidence-raising suggestions and uncouple you from the link with unhelpful stories you've had about yourself.  As well as reframing the past, I can also help you learn techniques to boost your confidence in the moment. These will be life-long skills you can use in other areas of your life where you want to feel more positive.
